Critical thinking has long been the backbone of sound decision-making and problem-solving. In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, it’s more essential than ever. Ironically, however, this invaluable skill is increasingly under threat. Artificial intelligence (AI) platforms, like ChatGPT, while incredibly useful for quick information and productivity, present unique challenges to the cultivation of critical thinking. This article explores why critical thinking is crucial in our AI-dominated world and how the convenience offered by these technologies may inadvertently diminish it.
Why Critical Thinking Matters
Critical thinking involves analysing information objectively and making reasoned judgments. This includes the ability to evaluate facts, identify assumptions, and consider potential outcomes. In fields where decisions carry significant consequences, such as risk management, critical thinking helps ensure that solutions are not only viable but thoroughly considered. Without it, individuals are more vulnerable to misinformation, manipulation, and shallow reasoning.
As Dr. Linda Elder, President of the Foundation for Critical Thinking, points out, “critical thinking is essential in the age of information overload.” Without a critical mindset, we risk making decisions based on incomplete understanding or superficial analysis. In contexts where every decision impacts stakeholders or organisations, this can lead to poorly informed choices and unintended consequences.
The Convenience Paradox: How AI Challenges Critical Thinking
With AI platforms like ChatGPT, vast amounts of information are accessible at a moment’s notice. While this democratization of knowledge is powerful, it also presents a paradox. The convenience of quick answers can foster a reliance on ready-made responses rather than active engagement, a habit that risks eroding the skill of critical analysis. When answers are readily available, there’s less motivation to investigate deeply or question the information, leading to an illusion of expertise.

- Superficial Understanding and Loss of Depth When AI provides quick answers, users may not feel compelled to dig deeper or critically examine the information. Daniel Willingham, Professor of Psychology, explains that “critical thinking isn’t about what you think, but about how you think.” He argues that AI can lead people to skip this 'how,' potentially accepting AI-generated responses without scrutiny. "AI should be seen as a tool to enhance thinking, not replace it," he advises.
- False Sense of Expertise AI can create the impression that anyone can quickly master a subject. However, genuine expertise involves years of learning, critical reflection, and context. Dr. Gary Marcus, cognitive scientist and AI expert, warns, “AI models like ChatGPT are powerful, but they lack the fundamental capacity for true understanding or ethical reasoning.” Over-reliance on AI can lead individuals to skip the essential steps of questioning, validating, or contextualising the suggestions AI offers.
- Confirmation Bias and Information Bubbles AI platforms often provide answers based on probabilistic patterns, which can reinforce mainstream views or personal biases. Paul Kirschner, Professor of Educational Psychology, notes, “AI offers easy answers, but critical thinking requires a mental exercise to evaluate, connect, and contextualize information.” In fields like risk management, diverse perspectives can reveal hidden risks, and a critical approach is essential to avoid falling into information bubbles.
- Diminished Problem-Solving Abilities Problem-solving often requires creativity, persistence, and iterative thinking. While AI can suggest solutions, over-reliance on AI to “solve” problems can discourage the mental rigor that comes from exploring alternatives and considering long-term impacts.
- Erosion of Ethical and Moral Judgments Many challenges require ethical consideration, something that AI currently cannot replicate. Dr. Stephen Brookfield, author of "Teaching for Critical Thinking," explains, "Critical thinking is grounded in the ability to view information from multiple perspectives and to consider potential biases and alternative interpretations.” AI might provide helpful data, but it cannot weigh moral implications, which are vital in many decision-making contexts.
How to Preserve Critical Thinking in the Age of AI
AI’s role in modern life is unlikely to diminish, and its benefits are substantial. However, there are steps individuals, educators, and employers can take to ensure critical thinking remains a core skill.
- Encourage Questioning and Skepticism People should be encouraged to question the sources of information and evaluate the credibility of AI-generated content. Asking, “Is this accurate?” “What biases might this information carry?” or “What else should I consider?” fosters a more critical approach.
- Promote Active Learning and Research Skills Emphasize the value of in-depth research, analysis, and learning beyond obtaining an answer. Assignments that require sourcing information, comparing viewpoints, and building arguments counteract passive consumption and encourage critical thinking.
- Reinforce the Value of Human Insight and Judgment AI is a valuable tool, but human intuition, ethics, and contextual understanding are irreplaceable. Dr. Elder reminds us, “AI can provide vast amounts of information, but it’s the questioning and analyzing of that information that gives it meaning.” Training sessions on ethical decision-making and scenario planning can strengthen these skills.
- Invest in Continuous Education and Skills Development As AI evolves, it’s critical to stay informed about its limitations and biases. Continuous education that focuses on critical thinking, data literacy, and ethical reasoning ensures that individuals maintain a balanced approach to AI-generated information.
